Bun B and Southern Roots Gangsta Rap

Southern hip hop has hit it big as of late, with acts pouring out of the Dirty South from Atlanta, New Orleans, and yes, even Port Arthur, Texas. From the latter city reigns Bun B, aka Bernard Freeman. Bun B is part of the UGK team and works with Rap-A-Lot Records.

Like many rappers trying to get their start in the business, Bun B got his start working with other rappers on their albums. Perhaps the biggest ever song that he guest starred on was "Big Pimpin'" by Jay-Z. Who can't close their eyes and hear the Asian twirling flutes, thumping bass, and chorus to that song: "Big Pimpin', check it and see..."

Bun B also worked with Slum Thug, Paul Wall, the Ying Yang Twins, and Pitfull, as well as many other Southenr hip hop artists. The member of U.G.K. doesn't discriminate though against northern acts. He has also starred on folks' albums such as Lil' Wayne, Beanie Sigel, and Lil' Kim.

Don't Mess With Rappers From Texas

But in truth, Bun B got a start much earlier than the 2005 "Big Pimpin'" or any of the other albums and artists mentioned above. What is this UGK after all? Well, Bun B and his buddy Pimp C actually formed the U.G.C. crew as far back as the early 1980s. And the first Pimp C and Bun B album came out as far back as 1988, a release they put out on cassette called "The Southern Way." Do any of you remember cassettes?

In the early 1990s, UGK signed with Jive Records, and they released an album called "Too Hard to Swallow." It and a whole assortment of other UGK albums were released and promoted in the region but you probably would never had heard of them unless you were hard core into gansta rap or from the Dirty South.

Later in the millennium, right at the turn in 2000, Bun B actually started a side project besides UGK called Middl Fngz. I am sure you can figure out what that stands for, right? The biggest piece out this project came with a Bun B video game appearance in AND 1 Streetball, with the Bun B song "Hard In the Paint."

Pimp C Passes

Bun B seems to have kept moved on with his career, releasing the first solo Bun B album called "Trill" in 2005. Just as Bun B helped out many of his friends with appearances on their album, Bun B had a who's who of talent show up to help out with his first album. The likes of Ludacris, the Ying Yang Twins, Jay-Z, Baby, and Juvenile.

The future of UGK is up in the air after Pimp C passed, leaving Bun B as the remaining member and owner of Trill Entertainment, their own company. Yet Bun B is moving on. "II Trill" is the second Bun B album from 2008, with the Bun B single of note called "That's Gangsta."
