Chingy Goes From Cameos to Midwest Champion

An artist from the Bad Blocks area of St. Louis, Chingy has found his way in a big way in the global hip hop scene. A lot of it has to do with getting attention and help from Ludacris and other established big names in the business, but it also has to do with Chingy being persistent in guest starring and making cameos in other people's productions, being dedicated to his craft, and being talented.

Chingy got his breaks after getting signed with Disturbing tha Peace. There, he was able to make cameo pieces with anybody from Nick Cannon to Fat Joe, From Busta Rhymes to Ja Rule. Some Chingy lyrics even found their way onto the movie soundtrack for 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Being part of all of these artists' songs meant Chingy also got some face time in their videos too. Which ones we talking about? If you go back to the earlier part of the 2000s and watch videos for Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Lil' Jon, you should be able to spot Chingy.

Right There at the Right Time

But of course, no rap star wants to be known as the King of Cameos. Chingy must have wanted to get big on his own, and he had Ludacris in his corner trying to help him. One of the demo songs that they put together to promote him was the Chingy song "Right Thurr." Promo tape? Wasn't that a huge hit? That what it turned out to be, you're right!

The song got so big that Chingy was able to put out his first album in 2003. This first Chingy album was called "Jackpot." Even though he was with Disturbing Tha Peace when he started putting the album together, he wasn't able to sign a big deal with them. He moved on to Capitol Records at this point.

On the song, besides "Right Thurr," the album also featured the Chingy song "Holidae Inn," which guest starred Snoop and Ludacris. What can you expect with star power like that backing you? Nothing but success. The album would eventually go to become triple platinum behind those songs and other Chingy hits like "One Call Away."

Cha-Ching for Chingy

After the release of the first Chingy, the artist would break away from Ludacris and form his own label, called Slot-A-Lot Records. What was going down? Word is, Chingy accused Ludacris of making off with the money made off his first album. But Chingy has also stated it was because he wasn't getting the promotion he thought he deserved. On the label, he'd release his second album, called "Powerballin'." The record went platinum, but some still consider it a bit of a disappointment after his much hyped first record.

The third Chingy album was even more off in sales, only going gold. Called "Hoodstar," it was released in 2006 and featured the master production efforts of Timbaland and Jermaine Dupri. It even had the hit Chingy song "Pullin Me Back," but the album's sales slowed after it came out ranked in the top 10.

After this, Chingy went back to Ludacris and Disturbing Tha Peace. He then released the next Chingy album, called "Hate It or Love It." Chingy also around this time moved to Atlanta, according to his MySpace page. About his new album, Chingy says that he was trying to grow up a little bit, and dig a little deeper into topics.
