Eminem: Enough Said

Eminem is possibly the second most selling rap stars of all time. Here is an interesting question for you: If Tupac didn't get shot, would he be the number one most selling rap star of all time? He's sold something like 75 million records worldwide, according to Guinness Book of World Records. Eminem has sold about 70 million around the planet.

The catch of course is that Eminem can continue to produce new stuff. Though he taskes breaks every once in a while, he always seems to return to the game and score with another huge hit. Whereas I think the producers who are sifting through Tupac's leftover tapes and recordings are done rehashing his career with best-ofs and the like. Then agaiun, Elvis is still selling and so is Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix.

But we're not here to talk about any of them. This article is supposed to be about Eminem and all of his great and transformational Eminem albums. Did I just use the word transformational? Yes, it's a big 50-cent word, sure, but it about captures what Eminem, helped by Dr. Dre, has done for the business. First, it's created a new type of charismatic rapper, not just all about gangs and tough living, but also with a brain and a nasty sense of humor and cultural awareness. Eminem lyrics also prove that a white guy can be a legit rapper, and that in itself is amazing.

A Slow Start

We all remember when the first Eminem album came out in 1999, right? It went huge seemingly immediately. But that really wasn't his first album. During the early and middle 1990s, Eminem battled in Detroit to get heard. He released his first official tape in 1995 actually-it was called "Fucking Backstabber." Then he released another underground Eminem record called "Infinite" in the next year.

Around this time, he also started to roll with a group of Detroit rappers, who collectively went by the name D12-D obviously standing for Detroit. But it was when D12 actually started to take off a bit that Eminem got noticed by one of the top rap producers and artists of all time, a fellow by the name of Dr. Dre. Perhaps you've heard of him? Dre had left Death Row Records by then and had his own label, called Aftermath Entertainment. Aftermath signed Eminem in 1998.

Fast Middle

By 1999, the first "real" Eminem album was out, "The Slim Shady LP." By the end of the year, it was triple platinum. As we said earlier, he really did get huge instantaneously. Part of the success, though, must have come from Dre's production and input into the project. But a lot of had to come from the raw talent that Dre was harnessing in Eminem. Listen to Eminem lyrics on this album, and you hear some brutal but honest material about real world pain and tribulation. And people dig honesty.

Ditto goes for the next Eminem record, "The Marshall Mathers LP," from 2000. Some people still can't get the Eminem lyrics from "The Real Slim Shady" out of their heads. "Guess who's back," as if people couldn't survive without their Eminem. Could you?

The 2002 Eminem record would be called "The Eminem Show" and would continue his brutal success. Around this time, the Eminem song "Bin Laden" even had the Secret Service looking into whether or not Eminem was threatening the president's life. Eminem didn't stop. His 2004 record "Encore" was just that-more success heaped on success. Since then, he's released "Eminem Pressents the Re-Up" in 2005," and another record is in the works, but always there is talk about his retirement from the business. But you're so close to catching Tupac, Eminem!
