Jadakiss Takes on the World (and Wins)

Jadakiss is so bad that he took on the president of the United States of America, and not much really even happened to him. You heard right. Jada Kiss as he’s also known, or Jayson Tyrone Phillips for all you out there counting real names, voiced his beef with President George W. Bush in the Jadakiss song “Why?”

The Jadakiss lyrics go so far to even link Bush to having some form of responsibility with the destruction of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11. And in the music video for the song, an actor holds up a not-so-flattering sign attacking the president. The incident got so much attention that even Fox News host O’Reilly went after rapper, and several radio stations pulled the song off the air or cut out the provocative Jada Kiss lyrics.

Making it Look Easy With Jay-Z

Has any of this stopped the rapper from The Lox? Not at all. The album that the Jadakiss song came off of - “Kiss of Death”- came out in June 2004. And since then, the hip hop star has signed with Jay-Z at Roc-a-Fella Records. Actually, it would have happened sooner, because Jay-Z has had his eye on Jadakiss for some time. A new album from Jada Kiss on the label is due to come out later this year, according to the word.

And, by the way, in case you were wondering, the song in which he attacked Bush, as well as opened up his soul as a rapper - that Jadakiss song called “Why?” - was also one of the wildest hits of the year. In fact, for Jada Kiss, it was his biggest single ever. The album also featured a romantic song with Mariah Carey, another big hit. How did the whole Jadakiss record do, you ask? It eventually went platinum, so take that, Jadakiss bashers.

No Kiss Good-Bye

We’re getting ahead of ourselves by the way. Even before Jadakiss got into it with the president, he had a career worth mentioning. His first solo album came out in August 2001, called “Kiss the Game Goodbye.” Some people might tell you that this album isn’t even worth mentioned. Actually, Jadakiss himself might even tell you that. It got bad reviews. Why’s that? Some folks say Jada Kiss only produced the record to finish up his contract with Bad Boy Entertainment.

Getting confused by my reverse chronology here? Keep up! Jadakiss got with Bad Boy all the way back in 1994 when he signed with The Lox group. They put out the other song on the “I’ll be Missing You” tribute single to The Notorious B.I.G. that Puff Daddy released in 1997. That was mega-platinum, and was followed up by a full The Lox album called “Money, Power, Respect.”

You want to get even farther back in the Jadakiss history? Here you go: did you know that Jadakiss first got his breaks as a freestyler, that is, a rapper who goes toe to toe with another rhyme slinger, one verse after another, until somebody can’t come up with lines? Jadakiss got his start when he was only 12 doing freestyle rap, and got his first big fame battling in a competition in Florida, where he met the Ruff Ryders.

From there, he was on his way to taking on the president
