The 1,001 Nicknames of P. Diddy

P. Diddy is so much more than just a hip hop rapper, mogul, and producer. It's kind of hard to fit all he's done for American culture in this short article here. Should I bother to try to explain all that P. Diddy's done? Yes? Well, here goes.

First off, did you know that P. Diddy is no youngster. He was born in 1969, which makes him nearly 39 (this being 2008). And for being that old, P. Diddy nearly has as many names and nicknames as years behind him. His real name is Sean John Combs. He got big being called Puff Daddy, a name people still love, along with just Puffy and Puff. He then went to P. Diddy, and then just Diddy. Yet in some countries in the world, he still has to go by the stage name of P. Diddy, in the U.K. and New Zealand, because some other star already was called Diddy.

Then get this. Earlier this year, a rumor started that he was going to change his stage name to his real name. For the time being, though, Diddy denies the rumor and chooses to still be called by his latest nicknames.

Puffy Gets Biggie

Does he care that sometimes he gets made fun of because of all his stage name changes? Why should he care? The man is a mega mogul who started Bad Boy Records in the early 1990s after making a name for himself as a young producer with Uptown Records in Washington DC.

It was with Bad Boy that he launched the fame of a certain chubby hardcore rapper by the name of The Notorious B.I.G., who had his share of nicknames too. Biggie anybody? Craig Mack and Mase were other Diddy signings that had success. Then again, we're talking about the man who's produced Lil' Kim, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Aretha Franklin, to name a few.

East Coast Vs. West Coast

But of course, with fame usually comes some issues in the hip hop community. And P. Diddy is no different. Remember the whole West Coast-East Coast rivalry between Biggie, Diddy and Bad Boy and Suge, Tupac, and Death Row Records? Who could forget, especially since rumors are still out there that Tupac and Biggie met their untimely fates somehow because of it.

Then there is the time in 1999 that P. Diddy was involved in a shooting at a nightclub in Manhattan. Or the fact that Puff Daddy supposedly has been the father for as many as five kids, without ever being husband to any of his babies' mothers. Trouble you at all? How about the fact that he's been arrested for driving despite having a suspending driver's license? Or that his "Making the Band 2" reality show turned out to be a failure?

On High With J Lo

Let's kid not ourselves, though. Puffy has come a long way from the Harlem projects where he was born and where his father was shot dead when Diddy was 3. Yes, 3.

He's dated Jennifer Lopez, remember? He owns houses around the world, and has been voted as one of the top 50 most influential people. He's produced hit Puffy records like "Forever" and "Press Play." The "No Way Out" album that he produced won a Grammy, as did the Puffy song "Shake Ya Tailfeather."

Yes, let's not feel too bad for P. Diddy. Puffy-or whatever he is calling himself these days-will continue to do alright for himself with his clothing line, his CEO post at Bad Boy, and his megastar lifestyle.
